Singing was the draw at a festival of choirs in the Congo...The choir festival in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was the second such gathering since the annual event resumed after a 12-year hiatus caused by war and unrest in the eastern part of the country."Before the war, every year there was the festival," said Ahmad Parsa, a resident of neighboring Rwanda who attended part of the three-day event. Some 16 choirs – mostly youth – presented original songs focusing on the life of Baha'u'llah and of the Bab. Each year, a theme is announced beforehand, and singers prepare new material.
The event is always in the province of South Kivu, but the exact locale changes. This year it was held in Sange, where local residents gave a warm welcome to the hundreds of festivalgoers and a Christian church allowed use of a property it owned for the venue, Mr. Parsa said.

Lorraine K. Thompson, 85, of Nampa, died at her home on Monday, Sept. 28, 2009. Graveside services will be held today, Tuesday, Sept. 29, at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, Boise, at 1 p.m. Lorraine was born on Nov. 9, 1923, at her family home in Tolstoy, S.D. She attended schools in South Dakota before her family moved to Nampa. During WWII she worked in the Shipyards in Vancouver, Wash., as a welder. Following that she moved to a small town on the Montana/Idaho border and then finally moved to Boise. It was here that she met William Thompson at Lloyd's restaurant. After being convinced by her father that William was a good man, they later married on Oct. 3, 1948, at Winnemucca, Nev. The two traveled to together living mainly in Sioux Falls, S.D., because of Bill's car racing career. While in South Dakota she worked for Hyde Jewelers and was also known to be quite the seamstress and knitter. In 1968 Lorraine and Bill moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, following Bill's retirement from the trucking industry as a vice president. They would eventually move to Nampa in June of 2000 to be close to family. Lorraine loved to play cards, especially, Trash, Bingo, and Pinochle with her friends. She was a faithful member of the Baha'i faith, serving as a member of the local spiritual assembly in Boise; Marin Co., Calif.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; Granger, Utah; and Nampa.
Trash is a fun and simple game for children and adults alike. It's especially handy to know for long car trips, after school programs, and summer camps. Here is how to play the game.

We bought this album when our children were little and played it all the time. We had just become Baha'is and this music was the sound track of our lives. The women's voices are so sweet and lovely and jazzy. The instrumentation is artful and compelling. Now the children are grown, and the album needed replacing, so I have recently replaced it -- simply because the music is beautiful and uplifting, and not just for children.

Conservative members of the nation's largest Lutheran denomination will decide in a year whether to remain or form a new denomination after the church voted to affirm gay clergy, the Associated Press reports.
Some 1,200 people attended a meeting of Lutheran CORE over the weekend. The group comprises members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America who are unhappy with the churchwide assembly vote last month to allow gay men and women in committed relationships to serve as clergy.
Lutheran CORE leaders have urged members to withhold financial support for the Chicago-based denomination of 4.7 million members. ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson has warned that such a boycott would devastate the mission of the church.

Why don’t we see the suspicious hands of Hojattieh [a Shia organisation formed in 1953 opposing the Baha'i religion, Sunni Islam, and the system of velayat-e-faqih] that the great Imam saw as a threat to the revolution – behind the scenes? Who have jumped over the three branches of power, the parliament, the judiciary and the executive? Why doesn’t any one take responsibility for all those illegalities? Why is it that the call for justice is answered with the military forces? Is this anything other than the existence of foreigners behind the scenes?

EBBF (http://www.ebbf.org/) the , an international NGO representing businesspeople across 70 countries and dedicated to inspiring responsible business practices has issued an ethical perspective on the economic recovery
World leaders, whether political, corporate or of civil society, must have the courage to undertake deep-seated and far-reaching changes. Legal standards, political and economic theories are solely designed to safeguard the interests of humanity as a whole. Humanity should not be made to suffer for the preservation of the integrity of any particular law or doctrine. The economy has globalized but we are still bound by 19th-century mental constructs of nationalism and sovereignty.Photo: Uploaded on May 23, 2008 by Indigo Goat on flickr, liocensed under Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 2.0 Generic

Aleda Nelson notes that Southern Nevada's Baha'i community has 13 or 14 junior youth groups active currently, up from none a year ago. There seems to be, Nelson says, "a craving" for spirituality.
"I know the Baha'i community has grown, and I think it has to do with the fact that people are looking for more than material things," she says.
"When we can't get our emotional cravings satisfied through materialism, then people start to look inward."

Mankind does. It's Mankind's interpretation of religion that makes them fight.
God never said anything about fighting other religions. That was mankind who did that. In fact, we believe God is trying to tell mankind to stop fighting, and see each other as one human family.

Warren Odess-Gillett interviews Mahnaz Javid. Mahnaz came to the US from Iran as an exchange high school student. After the Islamic revolution in Iran, Mahnaz ended up staying in the US. She is a co-founder of the educational service organization called the Mona Foundation, named after a Baha’i high school student by the name of Mona Mahmudnizhad, who was executed in Iran for her beliefs.

We hosted tonight's fireside completely because our LDS missionary, Elder Mitchell, whom we have grown to love so very dearly, is slated to leave town for the next leg of his mission while we are out of town and he requested that we have some sort of Baha'i event before he leaves. The only way to fit it in was to have it on a weeknight, which is unusual for this community, but people rallied around and came anyway. We also had our friends Gail and Ned from the University, and a new friend, Susan, who had been spending lots of time with the Baha'i community in Ohio before moving here to Logan. All in all, thanks to Elder Mitchell's departure, we had a really well rounded group tonight.

The religion of jazz musicians, any interesting takes on this one? I know Diz and James Moody are Bahai- an amaglam of the three monotheistic religions.
let's not take this into the forbidden zone, but the Baha'i Faith is not an amalgam of anything, but rather the most recent of the revealed religions. see www.bahai.org for more info. in the jazz world, besides diz and james moody, singers flora purim, tierney sutton and vic damone, guitarist james finley, and composer/arranger russ garcia are Baha'is.

Over lunch, some female Baha'i relatives, poor and dignified, tell me about arrests and tortures, about how the government built over their cemetery, how their children are not allowed to attend the university, and how their property was confiscated. (One piece of grabbed land was turned, in that nasty, rub-your-nose-in-it habit of the Islamic Republic, into a police station.) During goodbyes, they kiss and hug me in public, illegality of unmarried male-female contact be damned.

The Alliance Française de Delhi's Golden Jubilee Choir performing at the Bahá’í House of Worship in Delhi. Dec 12th 2008. Conductor: Gabriella Boda-Rechner
Uploaded by François-Xavier Durandy on 13 Dec 08, 6.07AM PDT.
With more and more Bahá'ís participating in home devotional meetings, devotionals in Bahá'í Centers, study circles, Feasts, Holy Days, and other gatherings, the friends have been longing for songs all can sing together in community, songs that are reverent expressions of Bahá'í worship.http://www.intonetheverses.com/index.html
Intone the Verses is a source for music based on the Writings of the Central Figures of the Bahá’í Faith: The Báb, Bahá’u’lláh, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Shoghi Effendi. These songs express many of the most sublime thoughts and ideals found in the Bahá’í Writings and should help us all feel a sense of reverence and appreciation for guidance we have been given by God. These songs also have musical diversity: there are songs written in various cultural styles. Some are prayers. Some are written for group singing in unison, and some are designed for a cappella choir.Three CDs are currently available: Intone...the Verses of God, Singing His Praise on Holy Days, and Hymns of Praise! (A fourth CD is in production now.)These CDs have both vocals and instrumental tracks which can be used for group singing, personal devotions, or simply listening. The piano accompaniments are easy enough for most pianists, and there are guitar chords as well. The vocals on the CDs listed on this site are performed by Wendy Scott and Ron Lyles, both of California. Wendy serves as the producer for the project. The composer/arranger for all the songs listed on this website is (Dr.) Zak Mortensen. |

I am coming to the realization that this is why we need divine assistance, succor from the Concourse on High. Not just as an extra boost, as a way of saying, “Yeah, we all agree, you’re doing a great job, here’s a little something to help you out.” But – starkly – because we need it.We literally cannot fight this world and its consuming demons without an army of light by our sides. We have not the strength, and our humanity renders us frail as much as it does mighty

wow....Wall Street.....one of our early believers Roy Wilhelm who had a coffee broker brokerage moved his business onto Wall Street around 1908. It was the illustrious inventor of the Dodge Motor Car and Bahai in NY Arthur P. Dodge that introduced Roy to the Bahai Faith in 1901 upon their return from pilgrimage to meet with Abdu'l Baha. It was later Roy who printed the famous little "Number 9" tiny teaching booklets for our foremost Hand of the Cause of God Martha Root. They are indeed tiny, but Martha needed a lot of them in her small suitcases....Zabine
Subject: BAHA'I NEWS PHOTO
Frank showed me a photo this morning from page A25 of the Wall St Journal today, Tuesday Sept 22,2009. The article is called Taxes, Depression, and Current Troubles by Arthur B. Laffer. It is of a breadline in the Depression in 1930 NYC. From both sides the men are filing into an open door flanked by two signs. On the left "BAHAI fellowship." On the right:
"Let not a man glory in this, that he loves his country; let him rather glory in this, that he loves his kind."
