On a Third Way: God and science are not in competition

This is big. -gw

Also in the show, we continue our quest to get to the bottom of the evolution/creationism debate. Our studio guest this week is the cosmologist Stephen Phelps, who thinks he has what politicians would describe as the third way. A member of the Baha'i faith, he argues for a third way in the science vs religion spat where god and science are not in competition - indeed, he believes evolution is the founding premise of religion, and its purpose is ultimately to push humanity to the next level of consciousness. Do you agree? Have a listen and tell us what you think.

Hi George, I agree ... this is big. The current intense arguments going on between "religion" and "science" with such heavy hitters as Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, and Christopher Hitchens on the "science" side has gotten very polarized. The Templeton Foundation has sponsored several get togethers to air views on the topic, but we Baha'is have yet to be invited. So I was so happy to hear Stephen Phelps and know of this interview by The Guardian. The idea of a third way of understanding is really key here, and comes right out of The Seven Valleys, in The Valley of Unity section.

I hope we can all come together and help further this dialogue with our Baha'i perspective.

Sincerely,

We can all feel pride for the work Stephen Phelps is doing. The Baha'i perspective is truely the way out of the science-relgion dilemma.

I am so glad to discover your blog Masterkey, Ned. What in-depth quality reflections you offer! With your permission I look forward to excerpting from it from time to time.
