On a Website Where Baha'i Expansion Learnings Are Shared: http://teaching.bahai.org

This is the U.S. website where learnings about Baha'i expansion are shared. -gw

In an intensive program of growth, you want to look at not just what happens within a cycle, but also what happens from cycle to cycle.  Berkeley-Charleston, SC (A) has seen a lot of recent progress, as this report from the cluster’s area teaching committee shows:  more systematic home visits, devotional meetings, etc.  But the most significant fruit has come from one particular effort:  engaging new believers in the institute process.

The Area Teaching Committee believes this cycle witnessed the blossoming of the trees that were planted in previous cycles.  One of the clearest lessons to appear, as we reflect on this cycle, is that the impetus for growth is being fueled by the new believers who entered the institute process.  It is these friends who are bringing their friends and relatives to the devotional gatherings.  It is these friends who are starting devotional gatherings in their own homes.  It is these same friends who are enrolling in Ruhi Book after Ruhi Book. . . .

Another plant, that is taking firm root in this cluster, is that of systematic home visits.  With every intention of being systematic and consistent, we have often lacked the consistency.  The Cluster now has two friends who are committed to going out every week to visit specified friends.

On Roxanne Saberi, Musician: Her CD includes a Baha'i song

This article in The Concordian campus newspaper was cited on the bahai.us website. Saberi, author of a recent book on her incarceration in Evin Prison in Iran, has also released a CD of her music. -gw

Saberi began playing piano when she was five years old.  She studied through her sophomore year of college, and then decided to focus more on school and soccer.  Through the rest of her undergraduate and graduate studies, and into her professional career, Saberi played the piano as a hobby.

“When I lived in Iran, I had the choice between buying a piano and a car,” she said.  “They cost the same amount of money -- I bought the piano.”

Saberi recorded her tracks at Concordia after contacting professor Jay Hershberger, who was her piano professor while in college. Hershberger connected her with Concordia professor Russ Peterson as the audio engineer.

Peterson claims his job was easy -- pressing a button and letting Saberi do her thing.  But Peterson did more than that; he offered her encouragement and reassurance of her musical abilities.

“She would say, ‘I’m not a composer.  I’m not classically trained,’ and I would just tell her not to worry that she doesn’t have a degree in composing,” Peterson said.  “The songs are just hers.”

In addition to Saberi’s piano tracks, the CD will also include an Armenian song, an Iranian song, and a Baha’i hymn.  The summary of “Between Two Worlds” says that she shared a cell with a few Baha’is -- members of the largest religious minority in Iran.  The Baha’is, she said, became role models to her because of their strength and spirituality, especially when she plays piano.

“I think about the Baha’is a lot,” she said.  “Sometimes when I play, there is a smile on my face because they have hope.  These people are faced with injustice, but there is still hope.”

The CD, however, is not being publicized as widely as the book. This is because Saberi’s main goal is to inform people of her story and of what is happening to people in Evin.

On Baha'i Teaching Via Skype: Call it a virtual fireside or home-visit

Zabine Van Ness: Wow..talk about a 2 hour virtual home fireside...a most dedicated seeker in Tyler, Texas with their Bahai teachers. Accompanied by friends from Brazil and Malaysia. Prayers opened and closed chanted in Malaysian, then a prayer in Portuguese in Brazil and closed with a German prayer. Many questions on the bible, baptism... and the station of Baha'u'llah. Started with contemplation on several Hidden Words on Mediation. So many thoughts and concepts to be discovered. Neighbors in Malaysia stopped by to say hello too. All smiling at each other and waving. Hearts are connecting.

Yesterday we were blessed to have Zabine from Seattle join us for a day of teaching in Tacoma. Before we headed out, Zabine shared with us of her experience of having  participated in a virtual home-visit that brought together souls from the four corners of the globe for two hours of prayers and teaching via Skype. -gw

Subject: WHAT a song
Black Eyed Peas
One Tribe Lyrics

Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh!
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh!
Woah-oh-oh-oh-ooooh!
Oh-woah-oh!

One Tri...
One Tri...
One Tribe, one time, one planet, one race
Its all one blood, don't care about your face
The color of your eye or the tone of your skin
Don't care where ya are
Don't care where ya been
Cause where we gonna go
Is where we wanna be
The place where the little language is unity
And the continent is called Pangaea
And the main ideas are connected like a spear
No propaganda, They tried to upper hand us
Cause man I'm loving this peace
Man, man, I'm loving this peace
Man, man, I'm loving this peace
I don't need no leader
That's gonna force feed a
Concept that make me think I need to
Fear my brother and fear my sister
And shoot my neighbor or my big missile
If I had an enemy to [enemy]
If I had an enemy to [enemy]
If I had an enemy, then my enemy is gonna try to come and kill me
Cause I'm his enemy
There's one tribe ya'll

One tribe ya'll
One tribe ya'll
One tribe ya'll
We are one people
Let's cast amnesia, forget about all that evil
Forget about all that evil, that evil that they feed ya
Let's cast amnesia, forget about all that evil
That evil that they feed ya
Remember that we're one people
We are one people
One people, one people [One People]
One people, one people [One People]
One people, one people [One People]

One tribe, one tribe
One tribe, one time, one planet, one [race]
Race, one love, one people, one [and]
Too many things that's causing one [to]
To forget about the main cause
Connecting, uniting
But the evil is seen and alive in us
So our hopes are colliding
And our peace is sinking like Poseidon
But, we know that the one [one]
The evil one is threatened by the sum [sum]
So he'll come and try and separate the sum
But he dumb, he didn't know we had a way to overcome
Rejuvenated by the beating of the drum
Come together by the cycle of the hum
Freedom when all become one [one]
Forever

One tribe ya'll
One tribe ya'll
One tribe ya'll
We are one people
Let's cast amnesia
Forget about all that evil [evil]
Forget about all that evil [evil]
That evil that they feed ya
Let's cast amnesia
Forget about all that evil [evil]
That evil, that they feed ya [feed ya]
Remember that we're one people
We are one people
One people, one people [One People]
One people, one people [One People]
One people, one people [One People]

One love, one blood, one people
One heart, one beat, we equal
Connected like the internet
United that's how we do
Lets break walls, so we see through
Let love and peace lead you
We could overcome the complication cause we need to
Help each other, make these changes
Brother, sister, rearrange this
The way I'm thinking that we can change this bad condition
Wait, use you mind and not your greed
Let's connect and then proceed
This is something I believe
We are one, we're all just people

One tribe ya'll
One tribe ya'll
One tribe ya'll
We are one people
Let's cast amnesia
Forget about all that evil
Forget about all that evil, that evil that they feed ya
Let's cast amnesia
Let's cast amnesia, forget about all that evil
That evil, that they feed ya
We're one tribe ya'll
We people, we people
One tribe ya'll
One people, one people [One People]
One people, one people [One People]
One people, one people [One People]
One people, one people [One People]
One people, one people [One People]
One people, one people [One People]

Lets, lets cast amnesia
Lord help me out
Trying to figure out what its all about [what its all about]
Cause we're one in the same [one in the same]
Same joy, same pain
And I hope that you're there when I need ya
Cause maybe we need amnesia
And I don't wanna sound like a preacher
But we need to be one

One world, one love, one passion
One tribe, one understanding
Cause you and me can become one.

I think Lisa is onto something. -gw

On Getting to 9: Lisa did

On getting to nine. Lisa did.

You know the Jimi Hendricks song "If 6 Was 9":

Yeah)
(Sing a song, brother)
If the sun refused to shine,
I don't mind, I don't mind.
(Yeah)
If the mountains fell in the sea,
Let it be, it ain't me.
Got my own world to live through
And I ain't gonna copy you.

Now, if 6 turned up to be 9,
I don't mind, I don't mind.
If all the hippies cut off their hair,
I don't care, I don't care.
Did, 'cos I got my own world to live through
And I ain't gonna copy you.

White-collar conservatives flashing down the street
Pointing their plastic finger at me.
They're hoping soon my kind will drop and die,
But I'm gonna wave my freak flag high . . . HIGH!

Hah, hah
Falling mountains just don't fall on me
Point on mister Buisnessman,
You can't dress like me.
Nobody know what I'm talking about
I've got my own life to live
I'm the one that's gonna have to die
When it's time for me to die
So let me live my life the way I want to.

Yeah . . .
Sing on brother,
Play on brother . . .

There are undoubtedly lots of ways to interpret it. Baha'is will have a positive spin to it, certainly. Six has turned out to be nine. The sun has refused to shine; the mountains have fallen in the sea. You don't have to copy people; you can be your own self. Hippies have cut off their hair. You can wave your freak flag high. It's OK. We're all freaks anyway. It's time for all of us to die to self. Sing on brother/sister. -gw

I was reading Darrell Rodgers' Greetings and Updates « Music Industry Weekend at Bosch Baha’i School. And it got me to thinking.

The list of Baha'is in music is long. How many names long, I wonder?

Just how many Baha'i-inspired songs are out there now? What's the count up to? If you were to listen only to Baha'i-inspired songs, how long would your playlist be?

If money were no object, how much could you spend buying music from Baha'i artists? What is the effect on the world to support Baha'i musicians?
